What is BACKSET? What Backset do I need?
Backset is the distance between the edge of the door to the center of the main hole. The main hole is usually a round 2 1/8" diameter that the body of the lock fits through. The distance is usually 2 3/8" or 2 3/4". Today, most commercial and industrial doors are set for 2 3/4". The trend has been for more private homes set this way also. These are the two most common backsets. When measuring the backset make sure to do it carefully.
I see locks that are for right handed door and left handed doors. How do I tell which HANDED lock I need?
On some products it's important to know the handing of the lock. Here is an easy way to figure this out: stand on outside of the door. If the hinges are on the left, it is a left handed lock. If the hinges are on the right, its a right handed door. Most deadbolts come in NON handed, where the handing doesn't matter. Some locks also come in field adjustable, where the installer can adjust the handing. If you are installing a mortise lock, sometimes we need to know if the door opens out or opens in. Please feel free to call us with any questions.
Does the thickness of the door matter?
The thickness of a door can be an important factor. Most locks will accommodate doors from 1 3/8" through 2". Most exterior doors made today are 1 3/4". Many interior doors are 1 3/8".Some locks will fit on any of these doors right out of the box and others may need to be ordered for a particular size. If your door is thicker than 2" please let us know.
Are these locks weatherproof? Waterproof?
Most of our locks are weather resistant. Weather resistant locks can handle moderate moisture contact while waterproof locks can handle heavier direct water contact. Both weather resistant and waterproof locks can be installed on external doors depending on the environment. Many mechanical locks are both weatherproof and waterproof, with the exception of some extreme cold weather. Most of the electronic locks we carry are weather resistant but are not waterproof (with some exceptions) as their electronic components are not completely immune to water contact. Check each model description or contact us if this is a concern.
Do these locks require batteries or external power?
Many of the electronic locks we carry can operate on battery power. For heavy duty commercial use we also sell locks that can draw power from the buildings infrastructure. Most of the batteyr powered locks take 4 AA or 9volt batteries. While some batteries may be included with the lock, we recommend you use new batteries by either Duracell or Energizer. We don’t recommend Rechargable batteries as they don’t have as long a life as regular batteries, so you will be changing them more frequently.
My lock arrived one day and the latch the next. Why did my order arrive in two boxes?
Some of the items you see on our website may not ship from our warehouse. We do not have the physical space to stock quantities of every single item. This is normally not a problem, but it is possible for order to arrive in different shipments because of this. We will always provide you with all tracking numbers for your order.
What are user codes? Am I limited to one? Can others access my lock?
A user code is simply the code that each person is given. With mechanical pushbutton locks there is only one code but most electronic locks and keypads can have many, some as many as several thousand.
What is a privacy function?
A lock with a privacy function is a lock that locks from the inside to offer privacy to anyone on the inside of a room. Common uses are bedrooms or bathrooms.
